Where is Atkins Library?

Atkins Library is located at the heart of campus between the Student Activity Center (SAC) and Kennedy. With 10 floors, we are also the tallest building on campus!

Lost on campus during your first few weeks? Stop in at our Information & Research Desk and we'll help you with directions. Or, look at these these campus maps and you'll know your way around in no time:

When is the library open?

Our building hours vary by day of the week and by the time of the semester. You can always find current building hours here on our website

Not all services are available during operating hours. Use the following links to find current hours of other library spaces and services:

How do I reserve a study room?

While there are many spots to study in the library, sometimes it can be nice to have a private room to focus on your research or work on a group project. We have over 50 reservable study spaces, ranging from smaller study carrels to larger group study rooms.

Use Atkins Library's Study Room Reservation System to find and reserve the right study room for you!

                    A few insider tips:

  • Use filters on the left-hand side of the study room reservation portal, including room capacity, location, room features, and an option to view reservable Area 49 spaces.

  • Reservable study spaces are located on the Ground Floor, 1st (Main) Floor, and 2nd Floor. Not sure where your study room is? Take a look at the library's floor maps, or swing by the front desk and ask for help.

  • The study rooms are not locked, so you can head straight to your reserved space!

  • You can reserve study rooms up to 2 weeks in advance.

  • You can book a total of 3 hours in all reservable study spaces per day.

How can I print at the library?

Atkins Library has several print stations on the Ground, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors.

You can pay for printing and copying using funds from your 49er Account. You can add funds via a credit/debit card on the 49er Account portal. More information about your 49er Account can be found on the Auxiliary Services website.

Cost to print and copy:

  • 9¢ per page for black and white
  • 30¢ per page for color

More information (including instructions) about using printers, copiers, and scanners at the library are available on the Print, Copy, and Scan page on our website.

Can I get my textbook at the library?

Textbooks are available to purchase or rent through the campus bookstore, Barnes & Noble, located in the Popp Martin Student Union.

The library has some textbooks available for free as e-books. You can browse the Course eTextbooks list, which is updated at the beginning of every semester.

Additionally, some professors provide course materials to the library for their students to check out -- we call these Course Reserves.

Course Reserves are held behind the Information & Research Desk and are available on request. They can be checked out from 1 hour to 7 days, depending on the professor. Some Course Reserves may also be available electronically with unlimited access -- no checkout required!

Below, use the search box to look for Course Reserves for your classes. Use the drop-down to search by Course Code*, Instructor Last Name, Book Title, or ISBN.

*If you search by Course Code, do not include spaces between the 4-letter subject and 4-digit code (ex. search PSYC4103 -- not PSYC 4103).

Does UNC Charlotte have more than one library?

Yes, we do! Atkins is the main library on campus, but we have a small branch location on the 2nd floor of Storrs Hall  (pictured below) -- the Charles C. Hight Architecture Library. The Architecture Library has books and other materials such as drawings, plans, and technology. The focus of this collection includes 20th and 21st century design, architects, and the built environment.

Although the Architecture Library is specific to one subject, everyone is welcome to come hang out, study, and use their materials! Remember that the Architecture Library's hours differ from the main library's.

Can I work at Atkins Library?

We have several student employee positions in the library, ranging from staffing our service desks to more behind-the-scenes work. To see if we have any positions currently open, go to Hire-A-Niner and search "Atkins Library."
