Dr. Adriana Ocejo Monge (Mathematics and Statistics)

Dr. Ocejo Monge holds a Ph.D in Statistics from the University of Warwick, UK and works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. She currently serves as the Mathematics Honors Director and will become the Math Undergraduate Coordinator in Fall 2023. Her research areas include probability theory, stochastic optimal control, and their applications in mathematical finance and actuarial science. In 2022, she won the “Doob Best Paper Award” in a special issue of Methodology and Computing in Applied Probability.

Dr. Ocejo Monge serves as a mentor in the Math Alliance, whose primary goal is "to be sure that every underrepresented or underserved American student with the talent and the ambition has the opportunity to earn a doctoral degree in a mathematical or statistical science." She also serves as a mentor in the Financial Mathematics Mentorship Initiative, a platform to bring together mentors and mentees for advice on many issues that affect young academics, especially those coming from under-represented groups. She is also a member of SACNAS, Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science.

Adriana was born and raised in Mexico, loves the outdoors, walking trails, tacos, and dancing!

Dr. Juan Luis Vivero-Escoto (Chemistry)

Dr. Juan Luis Vivero-Escoto is an Associate Professor of Chemistry. Dr. Vivero-Escoto holds a Ph.D in Chemistry from Iowa State, an M.S in Chemical Engineering, and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico.

Dr. Vivero-Escoto also works to educate K-12 students and the community in general about the principles, benefits and applications of nanotechnology. His lab is developing an outreach program called, “Think Big Do Nano.” The first target of this program was to put together a workshop called “Big things from a small world,” which will include presentations and experiments related with nanotechnology and its applications. This workshop is going to be presented next year in K-12 schools and science fairs around the Charlotte community.
