History of Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church

First is the oldest church in Mecklenburg county. It was organized by Scotch-Irish settlers in the summer of 1775, the Sugaw Creek church was officially formed in 1758 with Alexander Craighead serving as its first pastor. There is a school house and historic cemetery in the back of the church where Craighead and many of their other founders are laid to rest .

  • The collection consists of one church model made of painted paper and cardboard with glassine windows. Attribution is made solely on a small sign painted to the right of the front door on the model which reads; "Sugaw Creek".
