Researching UNC Charlotte History

Records of Units, Offices & Departments

There are many resources available in the University Archives to help find information on the units, colleges, offices, and departments that make up UNC Charlotte. While members of our reference staff are trained to help you with this type of research, here are a few key resources to get you started in your search:

  • Check out our finding aids to see if there is already a published collection for the unit, college, office, or department
  • Records about academic departments and administrative offices are often contained within the records of the vice chancellor who oversees them at the unit level. For example, records about academic departments can be found in the Academic Affairs Records (UA0071) and the Academic Affairs Vice Chancellor Subject Files (UA0001). Records about facilities planning can be found in the Business Affairs Vice Chancellor Subject Files (UA0019).
  • Records about all types of academic and administrative decision making can be found in the Chancellors' Records (each chancellor has their own collection; the records are not grouped under one large collection)
  • Decisions regarding faculty and staff may be found in their governance records
  • Overall snapshots of the University can be found in the records for SACS re-accreditation
  • Finally, information about all aspects of the University can be found in catalogs, University publications, and the Charlotte Observer (or other local newspapers)
