About the Event:
The UNC Charlotte Race and Social Equity Spring Forum is hosted in collaboration with the J. Murrey Atkins Library, the Multicultural Mental Health & Equity Initiative of the Center for Counseling at Psychological Services (CAPS), and the UNC Charlotte Black Student Mental Health Task Force. The purpose of the forum is to highlight a local or regional issue and engage thought leaders and community members in dialogue for solutions.

Our theme this year is "Strategies for Holistic Healing: Mental Health and Diverse Communities during COVID-19."  We are hoping to address racial and social equity issues as it relates to mental health and diverse communities and the increasing disparities resulting from COVID-19.  Additionally, attendees will learn practical strategies for holistically healing themselves and diverse communities.

About RASE

The Race and Social Equity Academy (RASE) fosters the scholarship of practice and research focused on advancing racial and social parities within the community. Along with empirical scholarship, race dialogue will be supported through intellectual discourse, bringing together thought leaders in our community representing a variety of perspectives on race and social equity matters.

About the Multicultural Mental Health & Equity Initiative (MMHEI)

The Multicultural Mental Health & Equity Initiative (MMHEI) was developed by CAPS staff in consultation with UNC Chapel Hill’s CAPS to specifically address the mental health and wellbeing needs of students of color.  In recognition of both the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on folx of color as well as the ways in which traditional mental health services have historically neglected development of culturally-responsive services, CAPS MMHEI in alignment with the larger university’s goals to pursue equity, inclusion, and diversity, endeavors to destigmatize mental health among folx of color, eliminate barriers to access, and provide culturally congruent support/resources.

About the UNC Charlotte Black Student Mental Health Task Force

Black students attending predominantly white institutions may be subject to institutional racism and structural inequities that make it more challenging to progress and success through the institution. Add to that a global pandemic that disproportionately impacts communities of color and a spate of shootings of unarmed black people it adds to the stress, pressure and anxiety that some students feel.  As a result, the Black Student Mental Health Task Force is a cross-divisional committee established in response to the recognition that additional collaborative efforts were needed to support the mental health of Black students at UNC Charlotte. The committee is tasked with ongoing assessment of the mental health needs of Black students on campus and with coordinating efforts to provide resources and support that empower students to thrive as a part of the Charlotte community.
