Understanding research impact

Research impact metrics demonstrate the attention given to and influence of scholarly output or academic productivity of authors and institutions using publication data and social media activity. Publication data metrics used to analyze publication influence include measures of a body of work, such as number of publications, how often those works were cited within a specific time frame, journal impact factor, Eigenfactor score, ScImago Journal Ranking, and Source Normalize Impact per Paper (SNIP), among others.

Data may be used by reappointment or promotion & tenure committees or granting committees to show patterns of collaboration, qualifications to conduct research, grant renewal justifications, and research trends.
