Researching UNC Charlotte History

University Publications

Since its founding, UNC Charlotte has published a wide variety of newspapers, reports, magazines, and ephemera. Students have also contributed to many publications. To find these resources you will want to search in two places:

  1. Search the library's catalog to find published reports, newspapers, and magazines by and about the University.
  2. Search our finding aids.

There are a few individual collections of publications to be aware of: 

  • University Publications collections
    • Today, 1988-1993. Published by Alumni Affairs and the Office of Information and Publications
    • Parnassian, 1958-1965. Student publication of the Charlotte College Writers' Club (later, the Creative Writers Club). Preceded by Owl Tracts.
    • Owl Tracts, 1957-1958. Student publication of the Charlotte College Writers' Club (later, the Creative Writers Club). Title changed to Parnassian in 1959.
    • Charlotte College News/UNCC News, 1964-1988. Published by the Charlotte College Alumni Association and the Alumni Association of UNC Charlotte.
    • Barnstormer and 3 (Three), 1967-1969. Literary and arts magazines. 
    • etc. (etcetera) magazine, 1986-1993. A biannual publication of the UNC Charlotte Student Media Board.
    • Undergraduate Journal of Psychology, 1975-1986, 2001. Annual publication of the Department of Psychology. 
    • The student newspaper of UNC Charlotte has had many names: The C.C.U.N.C. News, Collegiate Life, Charlotte Collegian,  The Carolina Journal, Forty-Niner (49er) Times, University Times, Niner Times
      • Digitized issues from 1947-1978 can be found online through Digital NC.
      • Physical copies from 1946-2018 can be accessed by visiting the Special Collections and University Archives Dalton Reading Room on the 10th floor of Atkins Library.
      • Past versions of the Niner Times website from 2019 to the present can be found via Archive-It.
    • UNC Charlotte Magazine1993-2018. Quarterly publication of University Communications.
    • Sanskrit Literary Arts Magazine1970-2021. A student literary-arts magazine. Name changed to Nova in 2022.
    • UNC Charlotte brochures and printed materials, 1955-2019. An artificial collection of brochures and other printed materials published by a wide variety of UNC Charlotte departments and programs.
