Resources and information for faculty interested in learning more about media literacy and incorporating into their classes.

What is Media Literacy?

Media Literacy is the ability to use critical thinking and rhetorical reasoning to find, evaluate, synthesize, and create information in online environments. Media Literacy guides people toward consuming digital media in a critical manner as engaged, well-informed citizens.

This guide contains a variety of articles, activities, and online learning tools to help you incorporate digital media literacy into your classes.

Why is it important to incorporate Media Literacy into your class/es?

Students are inundated with an overwhelming amount of information every day, whether they’re reading online content to incorporate into their assignments or scanning the posts and tweets in their social networks. Instructors have a vital role to play in helping prepare students to critically evaluate what they encounter online so that they can be competent researchers as well as informed citizens.

By teaching your students strategies and skills to identify misleading or manipulated information, they will become more proficient and objective in evaluating information and determining what is credible. Media literacy can be incorporated into virtually any class regardless of the subject matter.

For guidance on implementing digital media literacy content in your classes, please contact your subject librarian.
