Health care reform has been a contentious political issue in the United States for more than a hundred years. From the beginning of the 20th century to today, citizens have made their voices heard in these debates. For All the People tells the lesser-known story of how movements of ordinary people helped shape the changing American health care system.

The Academy for Population Health Innovation (APHI) is a novel collaborative between Mecklenburg County Public Health and The University of North Carolina at Charlotte designed to advance the health of our community. APHI’s core is built around the application of data and best evidence to understand and address community health needs.
Film Screening: Fix It - Healthcare at the Tipping Point

This documentary takes an in-depth look into how our dysfunctional health care system is damaging our economy, suffocating our businesses, discouraging physicians and negatively impacting on the nation's health, while remaining un-affordable for a third of our citizens.
The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion:
Moderator: Pressly Gilbert, MD - Dr. Gilbert is a retired orthopedic surgeon who practiced in Charlotte.
Panelists:
Denise Finck-Rothman, MD - Dr. Finck-Rothman is a family practitioner who currently volunteers at the C.W. Williams Community Health Center.
Susan Rucker, PhD - Dr. Rucker, PhD, is Assistant Professor in Interprofessional Health Studies at Queens University.
Karen Garloch - Karen Garloch recently retired from the Charlotte Observer, where she was the health reporter.
Presentation and talk by Dr. John Clarkson from Health Care Justice - North Carolina

Location: Halton Reading Room (1st Floor), Atkins Library, UNC Charlotte
Dr. John Clarkson will give a slide show presentation and answer questions. After retiring as chair of the ophthalmology department at University of Miami’s Miller Medical School/Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Dr. Clarkson served as Dean of the Medical School, and later President of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He will be assisted by other members of Health Care Justice - North Carolina to answer questions.
Health Care Justice - North Carolina is the Charlotte, NC chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program. PNHP is a non-profit research and education organization of over 21,000 medical professionals and members of the general public who support single-payer national health insurance. Health Care Justice - North Carolina also supports local and state issues, like expanding Medicaid and community health, but the principal focus is national reform.
