When Cather was a child, her family relocated to Nebraska from Virginia where they met other settlers from various countries, such as Norway, France, Bohemia, and Mexico. These interactions and growing up on the prairie became sources of inspiration for much of her work, including My Ántonia. The book was published in 1918 and focuses on a lawyer recalling his childhood growing up with the titular character.
